Looks like 2016 is the year the plate gets pushed aside to make room for the bowl. From power bowls to bibimbap, poke to acai and even porridge, the food bowl trend is picking up traction. What’s not to love? They’re healthy, low in calories, energizing and of course, Instragram-friendly. Here are our picks of the best Montréal food bowls to round out your culinary experiences.

THE POKE

This typical Hawaiian salad is made of raw fish cubes or seafood, often seasoned with soya sauce, sesame oil, seaweed, sesame seeds and diced jalapeño and avocado. And Venice MTL smack in the middle of Old Montréal is totally on-trend, with its California vibe and healthy summery meals. The tuna poke with rice, edamame, mango, gingered tobiko, shoyu and spiced mayonnaise is not only divine, it’s addictive.

THE POWER BOWL

A darling of the Instagram crowd, this meal offers a superb mix of healthy and appetizing ingredients. Vegetables, legumes, grains, proteins: the choice is extensive. Ever since setting up shop in 2014, the Copper Branch chain has switched up the fast food scene by offering clients gourmet vegan food. We love their super stacked energizing bowls, particularly the Méditérranéo, drizzled with basil-and-garlic-infused olive oil.

bol-dragon-aux-vivresA great Montréal classic that’s been around long before the trend started hopping, Aux Vivres has been a pioneer on the healthy food bowl scene thanks to its specialized vegan cuisine. Its dragon bowl, a delicious mix of organic brown rice, shredded beet, carrot, red cabbage, daïkon, lettuce, shoots, seaweed, grilled sesame seeds, grilled tofu or tempeh, covered in its famous sauce has conquered vegan hearts across the land. A sure bet—and yummy!

Mandy’s embodies the power salad concept; that is, a generous bunch of greens capped with a multitude of foods that are good for your heart and palate. We love the Wolfe Bol, served in a big beautiful bowl (that you can buy on site) composed of mixed greens, brown rice, aragula, kale, cherry tomatoes, toasted walnuts, avocado, shaved parmesan, shredded carrots and toasted sesame seeds. Be among this first to discover this new promising new chain in Westmount, Mile End and downtown.

At Résonance! you can settle in for a combination of café, vegan cuisine and contemporary jazz. Tucked away in a basement, this Mile End eatery is a go-to for people in the know. What we know is that its avocado roll bowl is a beauty and worth a trip in itself. The straight-up, prettily presented recipe consists of a base of rice or quinoa topped with guacamole, cucumbers, carrots, pickled ginger, tamari and sesame seeds. All this, rolled in nori sheets and merrily scarfed down!

The Bali Bowl… If you haven’t tried it, you should try it. Repost @alexemichaud 📷 by @srhdrp

Next stop is Little Burgundy at the September Surf Cafe, a superb space where it’s great to chill and where surf culture reigns supreme. In its bright and breezy decor, you can enjoy a little vegan Bali Bowl, whose secret lies in its coconut rice. It’s amazing! Another gourmet address in the hood: the Bon Vivant and its seasonal crispy vegetables with sunflower seeds, feta, and red wine shallot vinaigrette.

cafe-bloom-2-bolsFor a truly local Montréal food foray, head over to Pointes-Saint-Charles to Café Bloom, and be smitten by the Bol Bloom: a quinoa and celery tabbouleh, garlic-sautéed oyster mushrooms, soft-boiled egg, corn and cucumber salsa, pickled Nantes carrots, sesame coleslaw, aragula, spinach and chicken brochettes, should your stomach have room.

THE ACAI BOWL

Meet the newest star of breakfast! The acai berry is a “superfood” that is rich in antioxidants and from the acai palm, which the Brazilians have baptized the “tree of life”. Give your day a big energy boost by mixing it with bananas, chia seeds, coconut and granola. Our favourites are at Crudessence, September Café, Venice and JusPur. Keep an eye out for the imminent opening of Bélem Café & Yoga in the Mile End. Word has it the acai bowl is to die for!

Sunday’s are fun days 😍😀

For a delicious bowl of porridge, another food trend that’s slowly but surely winning palates over, go to Buck 15, a happening café in Saint-Henri where you can enjoy spoonfuls of its sleepover porridge, “overnight oats” with speculaas, fruits, nuts and maple syrup. So tasty!

Bibimbap 🍻👌🏻

THE BIBIMBAP

This typical Korean dish, typically served in a hot stone bowl, is made of a mix of rice, beef and blanched or sautéed vegetables, topped with an egg and seasoned with a fermented hot Korean pepper paste. If you really want to rock your taste buds, go to Omma, a cozy Mile End restaurant, and enjoy this delicious meal on its sweet little outdoor patio.
